The Florida Everglades Alumni Chapter was established in the mid-1990's as a statewide chapter, covering the state of Florida. Welcoming Centrailians in the Sunshine State was the ultimate goal to ensure a rich Marauder presence was the cornerstone of our chapter. Charter|Founding Members include our FIRST Chapter President Dr. Yvette L. Coursey, Charles E. Delane, who served as the first Vice-President and Treasurer, and Bertie Newbern as Secretary.
We also want to honor other early members Dr. James W. Bridges, Helen Davis, Horace Hunter and Naomi Harrell, who paved the way for future generations of Centrailians in Florida.
In the early years, the chapter met in person, with alumni from different parts of the state opening their homes and communities to host our meetings. As we grew, we shifted to a free conference call, and today our gatherings take place on Zoom.
Our signature event, the Weekend of Tropical Elegance, launched in February 2004. The weekend included a hospitality suite, golf tournament, student recruitment initiatives, and a dinner‑dance. Traditionally held over President’s Day weekend, it became an annual celebration until COVID paused our plans. Orlando was chosen as the host city for its central location, vibrant attractions, and easy accessibility for alumni traveling from both within Florida and beyond.
